Civil Partnerships

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on 5th December 2005 recognising a legal relationship between two people of the same sex. It provides a system for registering civil partnerships, as well as remedies within the law in the event that the relationship breaks down.

Despite this being a relatively new area of law, we have extensive expertise in the legal issues surrounding civil partnerships, including:

A civil partnership can be dissolved 12 months after registration on the same grounds as divorce – irretrievable breakdown of the relationship. Assuming the breakdown can be proved, a condition order is made to the Court a final order dissolving the civil partnership may be made 6 weeks after.
